about
Kovit Sangwaraporn is the deuteragonist of the YA novel trilogy Market of Monsters, written by Rebecca Schaeffer, and Not Even Bones, the webtoon adaptation of said trilogy. During the series, he assists the protagonist Nita in all kinds of illegal and violent escapades. Born in Bangkok, he was brought to the US by the mafia to work for them at the age of 10.
Kovit is a type of unnatural called a zannie, which is a creature that feeds off of (and experiences pleasure from) the physical pain of others. Despite his sadistic nature, he operates on a strict moral code. He is known to be extremely loyal to his loved ones, finding it detestable to harm or eat the pain of those he cares for. This duality of his is part of what initially drew me to him.
Throughout the series, Kovit never once falls into self-hate or wishes he had never been born. He lives in a world extremely hostile to him, in which his very existence is seen as a blight to be corrected, a monster who exists simply to cause pain and suffering. Despite this, he never bows to the wishes of human society. He cares neither for acceptance nor forgiveness. He answers to himself and no one else.
As much as Kovit loves his friends and family, he refuses to change his dark nature for their sake. He says, "This is who I am. Take me or leave me, but don't ever think you can alter me." This sense of self confidence is the most attractive quality of his that I fell madly in love with. To have the conviction to stand up to people and tell them that you know you disturb them, disgust them, horrify them, and yet, you just don't care? Say what you want, there is nobody else I would rather be with.
